A Grand Steward’s Journey to Grand Conclave

There is a special sense of anticipation that accompanies Grand Conclave Day — that annual pilgrimage when Companions of the Order of the Secret Monitor gather at Freemasons’ Hall, London, to witness the splendour of ritual, the dignity of ceremony, and the fellowship of the Craft in its fullest expression.
For me, the day began early at Warrington Bank Quay station, the platform still touched by the coolness of morning mist. Then that dreaded announcement that my train had been cancelled and the remaining services delayed, my journey has now become much more difficult than expected, though I’m doing my best to stay patient and adapt, but it’s certainly been a reminder of how unpredictable travel can be.

Eventually boarded, the familiar hum of the train offered time for reflection — on the journey ahead not just in miles, but in meaning.
The journey south to be in Grand Conclave early enough to make the official practise meant that this year I missed that shared camaraderie of other companions along the route, each bringing with them stories, laughter, and that unmistakable sense of shared purpose that binds us as members of the Secret Monitor.
Reflecting on the passing landscapes seemed symbolic — a reminder that Masonry, too, is a journey of progression, from the familiar to the enlightened, from service to understanding.
After disembarking at London Euston and meeting up with other brethren, it was only a short walk to the bus stop for the brief journey to Queen Street. The ride offered the perfect chance to watch London roll by—iconic landmarks, busy traffic, and people going about their day—a lively snapshot of the city’s energy.
Arriving at Freemasons’ Hall, the grandeur of the building never fails to inspire awe. The marble halls echoed with the greetings of Brethren reuniting after months apart, and the crimson and gold of regalia added warmth and splendour to the stately surroundings.
As Grand Stewards, our duties began in earnest — assisting with the smooth procession of officers, ensuring the comfort of visiting dignitaries, and maintaining the decorum befitting Grand Conclave.
The highlight, of course, was the Installation Ceremony — the formal investiture of the new Grand Supreme Ruler. To witness such a moment, steeped in tradition and symbolic meaning, is to glimpse the living continuity of our Order. The ritual unfolded with precision and reverence, reminding all present that the strength of our brotherhood lies not only in its history but in the dedication of those who serve it faithfully today.
Stepping into my duties as an acting Grand Steward, I feel a sense of humility when I am asked to present the recipients of grand honours to the Supreme Ruler. I know I am only a small part of a much larger process, and it is their hard work—not my presence—that deserves the spotlight. Still, I do my best to carry out the task with sincerity and respect.
Following the closing of proceedings within Grand Conclave the brethren processed out, the air was filled with that unique blend of solemnity and joy that accompanies a job well done.
Later, at the festive board, conversation and laughter flowed freely. Stories of the day were shared over a glass raised in friendship — a fitting close to a memorable occasion.
Now only one duty remained to be fulfilled and that was our own Provincial Supreme Rulers tradition of “lets have a final drink in Wetherspoons” beforewe boarded the train once more. As the train rolled northward fatigue gave way to quiet contentment, Grand Conclave had been not merely a meeting, but a reaffirmation — of commitment, of unity, and of the enduring spirit of the Secret Monitor.
To any brother receiving honours at Grand Conclave, based on my own experience, I wholeheartedly encourage you to make the effort to attend. It is a truly wonderful and memorable occasion—one that fills you with pride, fellowship, and gratitude. For those privileged to serve as Grand Stewards or an Acting Officer, such days remind us why we wear the crimson collar with pride: not for distinction, but for devotion
For any brother in the order, beyond the formalities, Grand Conclave offers an atmosphere of warmth and unity, where friendships are renewed and new connections are made. It reminds us all of the strength and purpose of our fraternity, and of the honour that comes with being part of it —attend, take part, and savour every moment. It’s an experience that you will cherish for years to come.
